Soothing Bath Salts [Valentine's Day Tutorial]

Hello there. It’s been a while. And that makes me sad. But…I’m here now so let’s get on with it! I guess I’m a little late with a Valentine’s Day craft tutorial since it’s the day after tomorrow, but, better late than never. It’s been on my mind since the end of last month to come up with something cute to give to friends for this fun day and since I love homemade beauty supplies,I thought I’d try my hand at making some bath salts. They are very easy to make and very easy to get creative with. I’ve got this fantastic book that Kristina gave me for Christmas called Eco Beauty by Janice Cox and I highly recommend it. That’s where I got the idea to do this as a gift. I’ll be giving them to some lovely ladies at church tomorrow so hopefully none of them will come across this post before tomorrow evening.

Here is the basic recipe:

1 cup Epsom salts

1/2 cup rock or kosher salt

1 box Candy Conversation Hearts

5 drops lavender essential oil

1 tablespoon Coconut oil

Cute containers and decorating stuff

Makes 3 “servings”(1/2 cup per use)

Now,the thing with bath salts is that you can really do any scent or color (though I chose to skip the color). I also did a batch with dried rosemary and rosemary essential oil (that was a special one just for Joel’s mom). It is absolutely delightful. So, just pick your essential oil (and food coloring if you so desire) and you can have any bath salt you want. Or you can just follow this recipe. Multiply it to get however many “servings”you’ll need. Each time you use it will take about 1/2 cup. I chose to give each person 1 cup so they can get two uses out of it. The candy hearts an EXCELLENT addition because they will dissolve in water and sugar helps to soften your skin so they do actually serve a function besides being cute and Valentine’s Dayish. Here’s what you do:

1. Mix all of your ingredients together. (I do it in a ZipLoc bag.)

2. Pour into containers.

3. Decorate containers.

See? Very easy!

Oh…you want details? Of course!

First I made my bath salt the ziploc bag. (I kept some candy hearts to the side for decoration purposes too.)

Then I put some candy hearts in the bottom of my 1/2 pint containers (canning jars).

Then I filled them up with the salts. It’s important to make sure that the candy hearts that are mixed into your salt are visible from the outside. I did this by squishing them up against the side and packing in some salt around them.

Once they were filled,I put some hearts on top too.

Then I decorated some cardstock hearts with glitter gel pens. On one heart I wrote the recipient’s name and on the other heart I wrote the instructions.

“To use:Add 1/2 cup of bath salts to running bath water while filling tube. (2 uses)”

and then,

“Love,Kayla”

Then I attached them with red and white ribbons. Here’s the finished product (front, side, and back).

Happy Valentine’s Day!
